The gusts weren’t as strong as the 60 mph ones of Monday, but
there was more than a slight breeze at the Colorado Golf Club in
Parker a day before the start of the Senior PGA Championship.
“The wind is really going to be a big factor,” defending
champion Michael Allen said as gusts whipped the media tent early
Wednesday afternoon.
Allen will tee off in Thursday’s opening round at 8:40 a.m. on
the 10th hole, a 459-yard par 4. The forecast, according to
www.weather.com., calls for a
mostly sunny, 85-degree day with 15 mph winds and a 20 percent
chance of rain.
Even if the elements cooperate, the lengthy course, which will
play at 7,490 yards, will offer a challenge.
“It’s a big course,” said Allen, a resident of Scottsdale, Ariz.
“The greens are pretty severe. You can get in the wrong place on
the green and it can be very tough.”
As far as playing at altitude, Allen got a taste of that in
college at the University of Nevada-Reno.
“I’ve always figured, playing at altitude, controlling the
flight of the ball is important,” he said. “The caddie has to do a
lot of math.”
