A local Scout troop helps kids with special needs transition to the traditional Scout program, and it's hosting an informational night for those who may want to join.
Troop 5280 of Scouts BSA — formerly the Boy Scouts of America, which now includes girls — started in 2009 to provide special needs scouts with a basic knowledge of the traditional Scouts BSA program.
Troop 5280 is the first Transitional Scouts BSA Troop for boys and girls ages 10 1/2 to 18 in the Denver area. The Troop works to build self-esteem, social skills and scouting skills. It follows the traditional scouting outdoor program, including camping, fishing and hiking, as well as rank advancement and work on merit badges. Troop 5280 tailors the needs for each scout's advancement to the scout's individual strengths and challenges.
Once a Troop 5280 scout has experienced some fundamentals, the scout can transition to a local traditional troop and actively participate with his or her new troop's scouting program, or the scout and parents can choose to remain with Troop 5280.
Girls and boys ages 5 to 10 1/2 are also invited because the troop wants to start a Cub Scout Pack for younger kids with special needs. Siblings of special needs students are encouraged to join as well.
Troop meetings are 6:30-8 p.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at Saint Peter Lutheran Church at 9300 E. Belleview Ave. in Greenwood Village, near Belleview Avenue and Interstate 25.
Interested kids and parents can come to an informational night at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at that church.
