The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is recruiting for its next class of volunteer victim assistants.

The 2011 Volunteer Victim Assistance Training Academy will begin meeting in July. The 10-week, 50-hour course lasts through September and is held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Participants learn about crisis intervention and short-term support for crime victims and individuals who have experienced recent trauma. The Victim Assistance Program additionally offers information about referrals, victim rights, victim compensation and case status. Following graduation, every month volunteers must sign up for at least two shifts and attend a training meeting on the first Monday.

Application packets are available from the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office human resources department at 720-874-4118. The deadline is May 27.

Applicants must submit to an in-depth background investigation, including a personal interview and a polygraph examination.

Interested individuals can contact Victim Assistance Coordinator Kathleen Beebe at 720-874-4190 for more information.
