A search of an icy pond in Progress Park on March 5 did not turn
up a victim. That’s because the 10-year-old girl fell through the
ice the night before and then walked home.
“She and a friend came home extremely wet,” said Littleton Fire
Rescue Chief John Mullin. “But she is in good condition.”
Rescue crews were called to the pond at 12:47 p.m. Friday after
a passerby spotted a cell phone next to a hole in the ice. After
carefully retrieving the cell phone, divers spent about 25 minutes
searching the bottom of the pond, which Mullin said is as deep at
10 feet in some areas. At the same time, other fire department
members worked on repairing the cell phone, which had a dead
battery.
By calling a number stored in the phone, Mullin said the
department reached the girl’s parents, who told them what
happened.
“[The father] was very apologetic,” Mullin said.
Their names were not available, Mullin said.
Mullin suspects the girl dropped the cell phone when she fell
through the ice Thursday night and was unable to retrieve it
because it was dark.
“[The girl’s father] did not know the time of night and I don’t
know why they were going across there except for the adventure of
going across the ice,” Mullin said. “We are extremely pleased it
had a good outcome and we encourage people not to go out onto the
ice.”
