Nonprofit center offers support for women

Pregnant? Confused? There's a nonprofit in town that wants to help.

Representatives from Alternatives Pregnancy Center explained their mission to members of the Greater Littleton Youth Initiative on March 16. It's a faith-based nonprofit that offers free and confidential services like pregnancy tests, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, counseling and support.

Marcy McGowan noted that while it's a Christian organization, there is no proselytizing. And while counselors educate women about all of their pregnancy options including abortion, they don't refer or recommend that choice. They do offer post-abortion counseling for women who are experiencing a sense of loss.

“We do not benefit financially from anyone's choice,” said McGowan.

The center also offers a 10-week course called the “Diamond Standard,” which focuses on relationships and conflict resolution and is geared toward high-schoolers. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 46 percent of high-school seniors have had sex. Of the females in that group, one in 7 get pregnant each year.

“Choosing abstinence is an achievable lifestyle goal,” said Alternatives counselor Ashley Greenhaw, noting it's the only birth-control method that's 100 percent effective.

Alternatives is celebrating its 30th year and now has seven metro-area locations, including one near Broadway and Dry Creek in Littleton. They also have a fully equipped mobile unit. For more information, visit www.youhavealternatives.org/index.html.
