Local students among winners of 2009 Scholastic Art Awards

Artists from Littleton Public Schools and Douglas County Schools were among the more than 3,000 Colorado art students, grades 7 to 12, who entered The 2009 Scholastic Art Awards Show, a national competition that recognizes creative young people across the nation and awards scholarships to some who will pursue professional careers.

Gold and Silver Keys and Honorable Mentions are awarded by a jury of recognized judges: working artists and art educators. The 178 works that received Gold Key Awards will be sent to New York City to compete at the national level.

Area winners include:

Littleton Public Schools

Gold Key: Tyler Simmons, Heritage High School.

Silver Key: Aya Fukuda, Newton MS; Shelby Jordan, Newton MS; Sarah Magin, Littleton HS; Justine Platero, Options HS; June Pruitt, Arapahoe HS; Daniel Scott, Newton MS; Kayla Seymour, Options HS; Lindsey Young, Newton MS.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Camp, Littleton HS; Madeline Favre, Arapahoe HS; June Pruitt, Arapahoe HS.

Douglas County Public Schools:

Gold Key: Amanda Peters, Highlands Ranch HS; Kendall Hicks and Marissa Lenhart, Ponderosa HS; Taylor Adams, Briana Burklin, Andrew Maurer and Trent Moore, ThunderRidge HS.

Silver Key: Katherine Diamond, Castle View HS; Christine Henney, Legend HS; Weston Harper (2), Marissa Lehnerz, Kendall Moore, Ponderosa HS; Landon Desautels, Ginger Furze, Taylor Raasakka, Ryan Stern, ThunderRidge HS.
