Littleton apartment fire displaces 22 residents

An apartment fire the morning of Aug. 27 has left more than 20 Littleton residents temporarily homeless.

Littleton Fire Rescue received a call at 10:49 a.m. concerning a structure fire at 5494 S. Huron Street. Units arrived at the scene about seven minutes later.

“We had a two-story apartment complex. The unit on the end was what was on fire. When we arrived on scene, we had heavy smoke and fire conditions coming from the first and second floor,” Emergency Management Services Chief Wayne Zygowicz said.

Firefighters got the fire under control in about six minutes.

One injury was reported. A 25-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and first-degree burns. She was treated and released, Zygowicz said.

Investigators believe the fire started in the end unit’s kitchen.

The Mile High Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the 10 adults and 12 children who were displaced by the fire. The organization is supplying health services, housing, clothing and food.
