Joe Carpinello is an LSM for the Heritage boys lacrosse team.
In other words, he is a defensive-minded long-stick midfielder (LSM).
An effective LSM can impact a game, plays aggressively, shuts down the other team's best middie, intercept passes, controls loose balls and helps with the transition game to offense.
The junior, who was a right wing on the 2018-19 Eagles' hockey team, has been a standout midfielder this season using a long stick with a shaft of about 60 inches compared to a short stick with a 30-inch shaft.
“When I was first getting into lacrosse when I was in sixth grade and my hockey coach got me into it,” he recalled, “I played defense in hockey, and defenders in lacrosse have long sticks so I picked them up right when I began.
“I'm a hybrid so I'm mostly defense but I'm the guy that will bring the ball down to the offense. When you play with a long stick, it is easier to get the ball taken away. I can integrate some hockey skills in lacrosse, like on ground balls.”
In 14 games, Carpinello has three goals on six shots on goal, 60 ground balls, and has a 36.8 faceoff winning percentage.
`Joe is kind of the heart and soul of our team. He's scored a couple goals for us and takes their best offensive player out of the game. If we are playing well, Joe is playing well. If we're not playing well, Joe puts the responsibility on his shoulders.'

Q&A with Carpinello
Who is your favorite athlete and why?
Von Miller because he's just a beast.
What would be a perfect performance in lacrosse?
Not letting my guy beat me and being able to shut their best guy down and maybe score a goal.
What is your favorite class in school and why?
Math. I love numbers. I'm really into it. Hopefully I will maybe go into business in college.
What do you like to do away from sports and school?
I play video games. I play hockey on the Xbox, hang out with friends, go to the movies.
What are your plans this summer?
I will be playing lacrosse and I think we are going to go out East for a week and play in a couple tournaments.
How physical is lacrosse?
I would say with the rules you can't hit as much as you used to be able to since they are trying to protect every player. There is still some physicality. I'm not as much of a body player as I am a stick player.
