Boys lacrosse playoffs to kick off

The first round of the 2009 boys lacrosse state championship playoff bracket starts April 30. Rock Canyon, the No. 12 seed, plays host to columbine (No. 21) 6 p.m. April 30 at Shea Stadium in Highlands Ranch. Douglas County (No. 10) plays host to Denver East (No. 23) 7 p.m. May 1 at Douglas County Schools Stadium in Castle Rock, and No. 24 Highlands Ranch hits the road 6 p.m. May 1 at Trail Blazer Stadium in Lakewood to challenge No. 9 seeded Chatfield. The lowest seed after the first round will be paired in Round 2 against No. 1 Arapahoe. the second lowest seed will be paired against No. 2 Mullen, and so on.

Among those who received a bye from Round 1 is Arapahoe, Mullen, No. 8 Mountain Vista, No. 5 Heritage and No. 6 Cherry Creek.

District baseball brackets released

Colorado High School Activities Association recently released the 2009 Class 5A and 4A baseball district tournament brackets. In 5A playoffs action, Mountain Vista plays host to the District 3 bracket. The Golden Eagles, as the No. 4 seed with a 15-4 record, open competition at 10 a.m. May 2 at the school in Highlands Ranch against Westminster (No. 29, 11-8).

Cherry Creek (No. 2, 15-4) plays host to the District 5 race and opens at 10 a.m. May 2 at the school in Greenwood Village against Fountain-Fort Carson (No. 31, 10-9). ThunderRidge (No. 18, 13-6) will also be at the D-5 showdown. The Grizzlies first game is 12:30 p.m. against Durango (No. 15, 13-6).

Highlands Ranch (No. 26, 10-9) will play 10 a.m. May 2 against the District 6 host Grandview High School in Aurora. The Wolves are the No. 7 seed with 13-6. Ponderosa (No. 30, 12-7) will play 10 a.m. May 2 against the District 7 host Rocky Mountain High School (No. 3, 15-4) in Fort Collins.

Lastly, Heritage hits the District 8 dance at Fort Collins High School. The Eagles (No. 11, 12-7) will face Boulder (No. 22, 11-8) in the first round 12:30 p.m. May 2 in Fort Collins.

In the 4A brackets, Rock Canyon will head south for the District 3 tournament. The Jaguars (No. 13, 11-8) play Pueblo County (No. 20, 10-8) at 12:30 p.m. May 2 at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs.

Castle View earned a place at districts as the No. 24 seed with a 9-10 record. The Cats play at 12:30 p.m. May at Golden High School in Golden against Niwot (No. 9, 14-5).

Valor Christian may have a spot in the 4A playoffs as well. The Eagles will play host to Woodland Park at 4 p.m. April 30 for the No. 26 position. The winner will play 10 a.m. May 2 against the District 6 host Silver Creek (No. 7, 14-5) in Longmont.

Douglas County 2 2 2 1 - 7

Highlights: The Eagles’ Taylor Young had five assists and three goals. John Hosack had three goals and one assist. John Nelimo had 1-3, and Zach Pendleton snuck two into the cage. Goaltender Sam Briner had 13 saves.

Mountain Vista 1 4 5 0 - 10

Littleton 3 0 2 2 - 7

Highlights: The Lions’ Connor Kellogg had three goals and three assists. Garrett Reese had two goals and one assist. Goaltender Cameron Merrick had 11 saves.

Arapahoe 4 7 1 1 - 13

Denver East 1 1 2 5 - 9

Highlights: The Warriors’ Greg Colosimo had five goals and five assists. Ryan Parietii had four goals and two assists. Eric Law had 2-2.

Arapahoe 2 8 3 2 - 15

Littleton 0 1 1 0 - 2

Highlights: Law had three goals for the Warriors. Colosimo had two goals and two assists. The Lions’ Ryan Turner and Kellogg had one goal each.

Highlights: The Eagles’ Adrienne Evans and Rebecca Medina each had a goal. Katy Oehring had two assists.
