Fischer dominant on mound

With runners on second and third and nobody out, Heritage High School starting pitcher Ashley Fischer didn’t worry.

Instead, she struck out the next three batters and helped the Eagles defeat George Washington High School 12-1 in a game that was called in the fifth inning because of the 10-run rule.

Fischer struck out seven, gave up one earned run and retired seven in a row at one point.

The Eagles led 7-1 when the Patriots put runners on second and third in the fourth inning with no one out.

Fischer wasn’t worried.

“It made me focus and hit my spots,” said Fischer, the lone senior on the team. “I wasn’t freaking too much. I have faith in my team.”

Eagles third baseman Jenna Engel was impressed with Fischer’s performance.

“That’s hard to pitch out of and she did it,” Engel said. “She kept us out of trouble. That was one of her best games I’ve seen.”

With the game tied at 1 in the first, Engel tripled to the fence, driving in a run and giving the Eagles the lead for good. She finished 1-for-2 and scored twice.

Fischer scored all three times she batted. Second baseman Maddie Davis drove in two runs with a double in the fifth, putting the Eagles up by 11.

The win was the Eagles’ [1-2] first of the season.

“We were more fired up and into this game,” Eagles coach Joe Gould said. “We had tough practices this week to get back into it.”
