Fireworks, family festival canceled

Posted

For the first time in event history, the July 4 activities at Belleview and Cornerstone parks won’t happen.

The cancellations include the fireworks show that draws thousands of people every year to the gathering along the Englewood-Littleton border.

Fireworks also have been canceled at Littleton’s Hudson Gardens. The displays had been scheduled for July 3 and 4. Lee Greenwood concerts on those nights will still go on.

Organizers announced June 27 that the Belleview-Cornerstone fireworks show was canceled because of the extreme fire danger in the state and because Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson has banned all professional fireworks displays in the county due to very dry conditions.

“Because of the extremely dry conditions, we also decided to cancel all related event and activities except the fishing derby,” said Kraig Stovall, Englewood fire training chief and one of the event planners. “Englewood officials left the decision to each vendor whether or not to set up on July Fourth, but South Suburban Parks and Recreation department doesn’t want any vendors or events in Cornerstone Park.”

The parks will be open for picnics and family gatherings, and the Miniature Train and the Children’s Farm will be open at Belleview Park. Pirates Cove Family Aquatics Park also will be open.

Stovall said that because of the event cancellation, the city fees will be refunded to the vendors. That includes the fee for the live music.

Additionally, the city is working with the fireworks vendor, Western Enterprises, about the fees for the July 4 show.

Stovall said $6,000 of the total cost of $20,500 is non-refundable, but the company is scheduled to refund the remainder of the show’s cost.

“We are working with the fireworks vendor about the non-refundable fee,” he said. “Because of the bans and the reasons for the cancellation, we are hoping they will apply that $6,000 to the cost of next year’s show.’

The fire training chief stressed the fact that it is illegal to possess, store, sell, use, or ignite fireworks in the City of Englewood without a permit from Englewood’s fire marshal.

“We hope people will understand the fire danger is very real,” Stovall said. “Someone setting off a Roman candle or a pop rocket can start a brush fire that could destroy a neighbor’s home so we are asking everyone not to set off fireworks.”
