Class 5A swimming is in the books, and Heritage cracked the top five.

Heritage High School’s girls swim and dive hit the 5A state championship meet Feb. 13-14 at the EPIC Center in Fort Collins and took fifth place with 155.5 points, trailing fourth-place Boulder at 167.

Arapahoe High School, which took second place in the Centennial A-League meet this year, took 11th among 5A teams at state, while the Littleton Lions finished 24th.

Among the aqua Eagles to make a splash in their respective finals was Michelle Patton in the 100 backstroke. She finished with a silver medal in the event. Coming in behind Cherry Creek’s Bonnie Brandon, who set a new state record, Patton took second with a time of 56.05 seconds.

Heritage’s Julie Widmann took fifth in the 50 freestyle with her time of 24.22 seconds. Creek’s Brandon also won that event.

Among the Eagles relay teams, Heritage took sixth in the 200 freestyle relay with 1 minute, 39.69 seconds, a fraction of a second behind Rampart. In the 400 free relay, Heritage took fourth with 3:33.46 behind third-place Fairview.

The Eagles also took sixth in the 200 medley relay with 1:49.68, behind fifth-place Monarch.

For the Warriors, their best event was diving. In the 1-meter diving finals, Beth Ambrozic of Arapahoe was third place with 430.10 points, behind silver medaler Mady Indmire of ThunderRidge. In fourth place, diver Dani Howe booked 414.65 for the Warriors.

Cherry Creek won the 5A title. It was the Bruins’ fifth consecutive win.
