There's a bustling art scene in Denver, but the suburbs have less to talk about, according to Stephanie Thomas, a Centennial resident who is part of a small movement to change that.

“Community — that's what we're all about. Creating an art community in the desert,” Thomas laughed, characterizing the south Denver suburbs as less fertile ground in the art world. “There's not much going on in the suburbs' art scene, and we want to change that.”

The South Suburban Artist Collective — SoSu for short — includes a small group of Centennial-area artists working out of a studio at The Streets at SouthGlenn. After forming roughly five years ago, the collective held a yearly Holiday Pop-Up Art Market, including at Aspen Grove in Littleton last year.

Now, the group is set to hold its first holiday art sale in a space of its own. It moved in August into 2154 E. Commons Ave., where it will offer paintings, mixed media, ceramics, jewelry and some textile pieces — along with greeting cards and Christmas ornaments — at the sale in early December.

Some of the collective's artists met each other though their experience as art teachers — Janet Moore, a Centennial resident, retired as an Aurora Public Schools art teacher.

“For us personally, having a space like this is just a dream come true,” Moore said, adding that it allows the artists to share ideas away from the isolation of home studios.

The collective also holds art workshops and is willing to host them for local groups.

Apart from the holiday sale, shoppers can purchase art at SoSu's studio any day when one of the artists is working there. There aren't set hours, but Moore is reachable at 303-956-5193.

The holiday sale takes place 5-8 p.m. Dec. 6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 7 and noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 8 at 2154 E. Commons Ave., unit 306, in The Streets at SouthGlenn outdoor mall in Centennial. The mall sits at East Arapahoe Road and South University Boulevard.
