Each summer Englewood repeats a happy tradition of the sort that glues a community together. It’s almost time for the 46th Annual Summer Drama Program and Musical, which not only trains young actors, but brings back cast members from previous shows — some of them Englewood High graduates such as Tom Gerlick, who is in his 13th performance.

The choice for 2010 is “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” a modern version of the beloved French fairy tale, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, book by Linda Woolverton — and the sorts of characters that spring forth from Disney: a singing candlestick, teapot, wardrobe and more.

The dates are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, July 30 and 31 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2 and the venue is Fisher Auditorium at Englewood High School, 3900 S. Logan St.

This will be veteran director Bill Ambron’s 108th show for the community, including summer musicals, which he took over in 1995 and high school productions.

Taylor Young, who will play Belle, is in her fourth year in summer musical as well as in her fourth year studying theater and dance at Mesa State College. Also a fourth-year cast member is Xander Trullinger, who will portray the Beast. He is completing a master’s degree in education and plans to teach elementary school children.

Jeff Krieg (10 years in cast) is Gaston; Matt Whipple (2 years) is Lumiere and Dan Carlson (10 years) is Cogsworth.

Vocal Director Wendy Mahr, in her 11th year, will also play Mrs. Potts and Tom Gerlick (13 years) will be Lefou. Bob Porter is Maurice; Aspen Petersen, Babette; Alex Hemmat, Chip; Stacy Crane, Mme. De La Grande Bouche; Ryan Parker M. D’Arque.

Jennifer Brickley choreographs her 14th show, Del Brickley is conductor and Alix Brickley is accompanist and assistant vocal director. Kelly Ransick is stage manager and Alex Brown and Brett Cremens handle technical aspects of this complex production.
