City or town of residence: Denver; I've lived here all my life.
Profession: Member of Congress.
Related elected-office or public-service experience: I have served in Congress since 1997, rising to chief deputy whip, and before that served in the Colorado Legislature from 1993-97, where I was assistant minority leader.
Why are you seeking this office?
I am running for re-election to stand up for my constituents and get things done. As a member of the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives, I have the ability to hold the Trump administration accountable and pass meaningful legislation that will improve the lives of my constituents.
What makes you the most qualified person for the position?
With all the challenges our country currently faces, we need experienced leadership in Congress. Especially with the potential for the House returning to Democratic control, I would be in the best position to fight for our Western values. We need people who will ensure that we can do what needs to be done for health care, education, the environment, choice, campaign finance reform, student loans and more. We need someone whose leadership and legislative achievements are proven, not just promises.
What would your top two priorities be if elected?
Promoting access to quality health care, including the full range of women's reproductive care. I'm a senior member of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over health-care matters, and am now ranking member of its Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee. I also co-chair the Congressional Pro-choice Caucus.
Fighting to preserve civil rights for all communities, including passage of comprehensive-immigration reform. At a time when the rights of the vulnerable are under relentless attack in this country, we need to stand up for justice, equality and compassion.
What else should the voters know about you?
As chief deputy whip, I ensure votes for key legislation and coordinate opposition to Republican bills that violate Democratic values. At the same time, I have won national awards for my work to reach across the political aisle where possible to get important bills passed into law.
