Prize-winning cellist to perform

Cellist Lauren Posey will perform Tchaikovsky's “Variations on a Rococo Theme” when the Arapahoe Philharmonic performs its Feb. 8 concert at Mission Hills Church. It will be a bittersweet moment for the orchestra. Posey is the 2012 Collegiate Contest Winner — a longstanding award program for the orchestra, started by early conductor Gordon Parks.

She was scheduled to perform on the night in 2012 that late conductor Vincent La Guardia collapsed and died as he prepared to direct the orchestra.

David Rutherford will be guest conductor. Audiences will recognize him from his announcing career on KVOD, but he is also an experienced teacher and music director of the Musica Sacra Orchestra in Denver and The Valor Symphonics Youth Orchestra, and frequently conducts for the Longmont Symphony, Colorado Christian University, Broadway in Boulder and more.

As a bassist, he performs with the Cheyenne Symphony and the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic's program on Feb. 8 will also include “The Russian and Ludmilla Overture” by Glinka and Mendelssohn's “Symphony No. 4 (Italian).”

Tickets: $25/$20/$15/$10, 303-781-1892 or www.arapahoe-phil.org.

Mission Hills Church is at 621 SouthPark Drive, Littleton.
